I closed my Facebook account today. Yes, yes … i know the 35 friends i had made will be sad (if they even notice i am not there) but i really find no use for it. I consider it a step up from the evil MySpace but not by much. I prefer LinkedIn which i have used for about 5 years or so. I have over 100 contacts, it’s strictly professional and has much more uses than playing movie trivia or what celebrity i think i look like. I mean, ask yourself why? what do you gain from such sites? popularity? mindless entertainment? voyeuristic pleasure? there are so many other places out there that do a better job. I will post my personal favorites on here over time.

Collecting War Game Miniatures

January 30th, 2008

I have been fascinated with miniature lead soldiers since i was a kid. i used to collect 1/72 scale plastic armies of Airfix napoleonics and the large scale WW2 soldiers, plus Britain’s Ltd. knights, civil war and cowboy and indian sets - i still have them and my kids play with them today. i loved seeing displays of huge miniature armies at museums and toy shops. Influenced by my dad and uncle, i started painting larger scale lead figures - naploeonics are still my favorite - that period had the best uniforms. I stopped for a while (other teenage interests and hobbies took precedence) but when games workshop released their Warhammer 40k figures in late 80’s i was intrigued again, so i started painting fantasy miniatures.

Zoot Allures

January 29th, 2008

frank zappa - zoot alluresGod Damn. One of the best songs ever written by Frank Zappa. I love Frank. I have every album of his and when ever i need creative inspiration i listen to my playlist of all his songs on itunes. the amazing talent, humor and creative depth of his material always helps me when trying to come up with the next big idea. Sheer genius and so much talent in every incarnation of his bands re-interpretating his songs make the creative process fun.

My favorite Zappa quote:
“Remember there’s a big difference between kneeling down and bending over.”

…think about it.

Flesh wound

January 27th, 2008

3/8

Friday night I drilled a nice 3/8″ hole in my hand. I was drilling holes in the bottom of my son’s pinewood derby car to get the weight down and was holding it so i would not mess up the paint job. Just as i was thinking “…this is the incorrect way to hold something while drilling..” - Bam! the bit went through the wood and into my hand. so after a lot of blood letting, pain and a $600 3 hour trip to the emergency room, I received 7 lucky stitches and some painkillers. ouch. don’t try this at home kids.

why chase hares?

January 22nd, 2008

The three hares is a circular motif which appears in sacred sites from the Far East to the churches of south west England (where it is often referred to as the Tinners’ Rabbits).

The symbol features three hares chasing each other in a circle. Each of the ears is shared by two animals so that only three ears are shown. It has a number of mystical associations and is often associated with fertility and the lunar cycle. However, its precise origins and significance are uncertain, as are the reasons why it appears in such diverse locations.
