Painting Azahir The Mad
An Evil Dwarf of Mid-nor by Rackham

Preparation:

never look at the picture on their card as it will show how bad you really suck at painting.

This was my first commission piece so i decided it would be a good candidate to catalogue how i paint a figure.

this is the figure straight out of the pack.

A Rackham Confrontation figure being Painted By Duncan Hopkins from BeyondBeyond 1. after cleaning any flash (extra molding) and seams, i cut the base slot off - as i am going to create a custom base. I then Drill a hole in the foot with a pin vise.

glue into the drilled hole.

3. i use 35mm film canisters (available free at any photo lab) filled with sand to use as painting bases. these are re-usable and comfortable to hold as not to touch the paint job. the sand gives it weight to balance it nicely in your hand.

don't know how i came up with this - it's the best way i have found to paint. if pinned i poke the pin through the plastic top. if the base is already attached i use double sided tape to fix to stand. I have around 20 of these.

the shield is fixed to the side with removable blue tack. this helps for painting associated tiny bits without losing them. The tack does not pull off paint and is removable.

4. The Figure is sprayed with a light coat of gray primer. this is the best option for the way i paint.

if you use a black primer all light colors will have to be thicker. the reverse applies for white primer.

Blocking:

1. I start by blocking in each section base color - this is usually a dark shade that compliments the final color of each section.

here i use a mix of flat red, cavalry red and black to get a nice rich reddish brown

2. Next is dark sea blue for parts of the creature's skin.

(Dwarves of Mid-nor are sort of patch-worked together like their canopic dolls). I paint half his face and his legs.

3. other parts of the skin are based ochre brown.

note the patched skin on the shield will match the creatures face colors for continuity.

4. armor sections are based olive drab.

(shield back is painted same)

6. the horns are all based buff for the time being.

I am trying to keep a muted palette in mind. these creatures are evil and live underground - the dolls add some color and humor to some of the figures but this guy is a real evil bastard. pardon my french.
